Gianfranco Rosi’s Fire at Sea chosen for Oscar Shortlist

Gianfranco Rosi’s Fire at Sea (Fuocoammare) chosen for Oscar Shortlist & Opens San Francisco/Bay Area on Friday

Today the Academy of Motion Pictures announced that FIRE AT SEA, the award winning documentary film from Italy, directed by Gianfranco Rosi, is on the shortlist for Best Documentary Film.

Situated 150 miles south of Sicily, Lampedusa has hit headlines as the first port of call for hundreds of thousands of African and Middle Eastern refugees hoping to make a new life in Europe.

After spending months living on the island and engaging with its inhabitants, Rosi accumulated an incredible array of footage, portraying the history, culture and daily lives of the islanders.

Focusing on 12-year-old Samuele, as he explores the land and attempts to gain mastery of the sea, the film slowly builds a breathtakingly naturalistic portrait of the Lampedusan people and the events that surround them.

In addition to being chosen as Italy’s Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language, the film is also now up for a Best Documentary Award!

FIRE AT SEA opens this Friday, December 9th, at the Roxie Theater in San Francisco and at the Lark Theater in Larkspur, CA.

“The film — in which Lampedusa becomes a metaphor for how Italy and the rest of Europe are handling the influx of migrants — has struck a nerve this year….real, life-size and viscerally unnerving” – The New York Times

In this stellar documentary, Gianfranco Rosi contrasts the lives of the desperate thousands landing on the shores of a Sicilian island with the everyday existence of the locals – The Guardian

“Deliberate storytelling that allows us to consider what documentary can do. It is urgent, imaginative and necessary filmmaking.” – Meryl Streep

Critics Consensus: Fire at Sea offers a clear-eyed yet empathetic look at a corner of the world whose terrain may be unfamiliar to many, but whose people’s story remains universal. 93% on Rotten Tomatoes
