From here, I can easily walk to the Galata Maritime Museum, Via Balbi, Porto Antico and the Aquarium. The cruise terminal is also relatively close.

For a first visit, I recommend the area around Piazza De Ferrari. It provides easy access to the cathedral, Palazzo Ducale, Via Garibaldi and the historic center.
Choose Porto Antico if the Aquarium and waterfront are your priorities. It is also an appealing location for families.
Stay near Piazza Principe if you are arriving by train, departing on a cruise or planning day trips to other Ligurian destinations.
Consider Nervi if you prefer sea views, parks and a quieter atmosphere. The district is connected to central Genoa by frequent regional trains.

My Final Recommendation
For classic elegance and a highly central location, my first choice would be Hotel Bristol Palace. Travelers arriving by train may prefer Grand Hotel Savoia or Hotel Continental Genova, while families visiting the Aquarium should consider NH Collection Genova Marina or Hotel De Ville.
For contemporary five-star comfort, choose Meliá Genova. For a romantic boutique experience, Palazzo Durazzo Suites is especially attractive. If the sea is more important than immediate access to the historic center, Capitolo Riviera offers a very different side of Genoa.
