Lucca Comics & Games 2026: A First-Timer’s Guide to Tickets, Cosplay and Getting There

Visiting Lucca Comics & Games for the first time? This practical 2026 guide explains which day to choose, tickets and wristbands, arriving by train, cosplay, food costs and accommodation outside Lucca.

Italy Now

Lucca Comics & Games turns a historic Tuscan city into a meeting place for comic readers, gamers, illustrators and cosplayers. You might spend the morning browsing manga, pass an elaborate fantasy costume outside a medieval church, and finish the afternoon discovering a board game you had never heard of.

For international visitors, the challenge is deciding how to organize the day. Venues are spread across the city, tickets and wristbands serve different purposes, and your accommodation choice affects how easily you can stay into the evening.

Lucca Comics & Games 2026 takes place from Wednesday, October 28, to Sunday, November 1. The published festival opening hours are 9 a.m.–7 p.m., with additional evening events listed separately in the program.

Here is how to plan a first visit without spending the entire trip in queues or on transport.

Information checked October 13, 2026. Food budgets below are planning estimates, not official festival prices.

Which Day Should You Choose?

Start with the official event program. If a particular creator, tournament or performance is your main reason for coming, their schedule should determine your day.

Otherwise, I would choose Wednesday or Thursday for a first visit. They give you a weekday option before the weekend, although this is a planning recommendation rather than a guarantee of shorter queues.

Friday offers another possibility if you want to combine the festival with a weekend in Tuscany. Saturday falls on Halloween, while Sunday is the final festival day.

Day Who should consider it? Planning advice
Wednesday, October 28 First-timers with flexible travel dates Lowest-priced standard day ticket
Thursday, October 29 Visitors wanting a weekday visit A useful alternative if Wednesday’s program does not suit you
Friday, October 30 Travelers combining Lucca with a weekend away Check accommodation and return transport together
Saturday, October 31 Visitors who need a Saturday Allow generous time between activities
Sunday, November 1 Visitors interested in the final-day program Check Sunday transport before booking

One day is enough for a focused introduction. Pick two main interests and leave space for discoveries. Two days make more sense if you want substantial time for both comics and gaming, or if you are bringing a costume that takes time to manage.

Festival day Total online price

Buy through the official Lucca Comics & Games ticket shop. Check the final total and delivery method before paying. A published price does not guarantee that tickets remain available for your chosen day.

Avoid committing to a nonrefundable hotel until you have checked festival admission.

How Tickets, Wristbands and Event Reservations Work

You need both a valid ticket and the matching wristband to enter paid festival spaces.

If your purchase requires wristband collection, visit a Welcome Desk before joining a pavilion queue. The organizer lists five desks operating 6:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m. during the festival, with an additional collection window at Baluardo San Regolo on Tuesday, October 27, from 4–7 p.m.

Visitors with multiple days can collect the corresponding wristbands together. Keep your ticket accessible afterward: the wristband does not replace it.

The official LuccaCG Assistant app includes the map, program and reservations for events that require them. Check each activity’s entry instructions; festival admission alone should not be treated as a reserved seat.

For a first visit, follow this order:

  1. Choose your date and buy admission.
  2. Check how you will receive your wristband.
  3. Read the access conditions for your must-see activities.
  4. Save your ticket using the method supported by your ticket type.
  5. Locate your Welcome Desk and first venue before traveling.

Can You Enjoy Lucca Without Buying a Ticket?

Yes. The official free-access list includes the city-wall promenade, excluding pavilions on the bastions, the Giardino degli Osservanti with its cosplay area, the Piazzale Verdi stage, and several other festival spaces.

That makes a ticket-free visit possible for someone primarily interested in the atmosphere and outdoor cosplay. However, it will not provide the same experience as a day exploring the paid pavilions.

Check the official free-access guidance and current map before deciding. Follow temporary signs and staff instructions as you move around the city.

Getting to Lucca by Train

For a first visit without a car, the train is a practical starting point. Lucca railway station is just outside the southern city walls, within walking distance of the historic center. Festival queues and pedestrian routes can add time to that otherwise straightforward arrival.

Search for Lucca as your destination on Trenitalia. Compare both directions before booking accommodation.

Starting point What to check
Pisa Centrale Outward and return regional services to Lucca
Viareggio Services toward Lucca and the walk between your hotel and Viareggio station
Florence Departures from Firenze Santa Maria Novella, including any changes
Montecatini Terme or Pistoia The exact station, journey duration and evening return options

Do not assume that an ordinary timetable or a previous year’s festival train announcement applies to your visit. Check your exact travel date again shortly before departure.

Buy the return ticket in advance when practical, follow its validation instructions, and leave room for station queues. A regional ticket should not be treated as a reserved seat.

Most importantly, avoid relying on the final possible train home. Choose an earlier departure with a later service as a backup where the timetable allows.

If you are arriving from farther away, allow a comfortable connection between a high-speed train and the regional part of your journey.

Arriving Through Pisa Airport

Pisa Airport is a useful gateway when your itinerary includes Lucca and the surrounding area.

The PisaMover connects the airport with Pisa Centrale station. Its published average journey time is approximately five minutes, including the intermediate stop. From Pisa Centrale, continue by train to Lucca.

The shuttle ride is only one part of your transfer. Allow for baggage collection, waiting, finding the railway platform and connecting with your onward train.

For an evening arrival, check the complete journey before purchasing your flight. Staying in Pisa that night may be more comfortable than attempting a tight connection with luggage and costume bags.

Cosplay: What to Wear and What to Bring

You can enjoy the festival in everyday clothes, a simple character-inspired outfit or an elaborate costume. For your first visit, choose something you can comfortably wear while walking, standing and using public transport.

Test the practical details at home. Can you sit down? Use stairs? Reach your ticket? Put on a waterproof layer?

Comfortable shoes, removable costume pieces and a small repair kit can make a considerable difference. If your outfit includes large wings or rigid accessories, think through how you will carry them on a crowded train.

Check props against the official rules before packing. The organizer prohibits real weapons. Its published guidance also restricts replica firearms without a red tip or equivalent front marking, and blades with sharp points or cutting edges. Permitted replicas must be associated with the costume being worn. Consult the official cosplay-prop guidance for the full wording.

For photographs, ask first, keep entrances clear and avoid touching costumes or props without permission. An impressive outfit may have taken months to make.

Food Costs: A Sensible Daily Budget

Food spending depends on whether you pack lunch, buy quick meals or sit down at restaurants.

Use these amounts as planning allowances, rather than quoted prices from particular vendors:

Food or drink Suggested allowance
Coffee and a pastry €4–€7
Simple takeaway lunch and a drink €10–€16
Snack or extra drink €4–€7
Casual seated dinner €20–€35

For lunch, snacks and a simple dinner, setting aside roughly €35–€60 per person gives you some flexibility. Breakfast, alcohol and more elaborate meals can increase the total.

The festival permits visitors to bring their own food and drinks. Its guidance recommends reusable bottles or plastic containers and states that glass containers are not allowed inside pavilions.

A packed lunch is therefore a practical way to reduce costs. Eat before or after the busiest lunch period, and check displayed menus before ordering. At a seated restaurant, look for any cover charge listed as coperto.

Give yourself a separate merchandise budget. It is easier to enjoy browsing when buying a print or game does not consume the money reserved for dinner.

Where to Stay Outside Lucca

Look at station access before distance on the map. A property advertised as “near Lucca” may be inconvenient without a car.

Compare the full cost: accommodation, daily transport, local transfers and the time spent commuting.

Pisa is worth checking first if you are flying through its airport. For festival days, accommodation within comfortable walking distance of Pisa Centrale can simplify the journey. A hotel near the Leaning Tower may suit sightseeing better, but check its station connections.

Viareggio offers a coastal alternative. Look carefully at the walking route from the hotel to the railway station; a seafront address does not automatically mean an easy commute.

Montecatini Terme and Pistoia are additional places to compare if suitable rooms in Pisa and Viareggio are expensive or unavailable. Check the exact departure station and return timetable before paying.

Florence makes most sense when it is already part of your holiday. For several festival days, weigh the longer commute against staying closer.

Lucca itself may still offer the best overall value if staying nearby lets you return to your room, change costume or enjoy evening events. Compare it before assuming an outside base will be cheaper.

Book Your Lucca Stay and Experiences

Start by comparing Lucca accommodation on Expedia. Use the map to assess the route to the festival and railway station.

For an outside base, compare Pisa hotels on Trip.com and Viareggio hotels on Trip.com. Enter your actual dates and check cancellation terms, late check-in and any taxes payable separately.

If you are staying in Pisa, consider visiting the tower on a separate sightseeing day. You can check Leaning Tower of Pisa tickets through Weekend in Italy. Read the time-slot confirmation and cancellation conditions before booking.

For a longer Tuscan trip, browse Florence museums and experiences through Weekend in Italy.

These accommodation and sightseeing bookings are separate from festival admission unless a package explicitly states otherwise.

A Manageable First-Day Plan

Arrive early enough to collect your wristband without sacrificing your first planned activity. Then visit the pavilion or event that matters most to you.

Have lunch before the main rush. Leave the early afternoon for browsing, a game demonstration or a second venue. Build in time for outdoor cosplay photographs and a proper break.

Before committing to an evening event, check how you will get back to your accommodation.

Carry a power bank, weather protection and a bag that leaves your hands free. Save essential addresses and agree on a meeting point with friends in case your phones lose signal.

For a first visit, the most useful plan is a short one: one must-see activity, one major area to explore and enough free time to enjoy whatever you find between them.
